Guilford Men's Lacrosse Outpaces Methodist, 16-7

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Methodist men's lacrosse team fell behind, 11-0, in the first half and ultimately lost, 16-7, at Guilford on Tuesday evening.
 
The Quakers (7-6) scored five goals in the first quarter and added six second-quarter tallies in taking a commanding 11-0 lead by intermission. Adam Fiore scored three times in the opening 30:00 and added six assists as GC outshot MU (3-9), 29-5, and won 10-of-13 faceoffs in the first half.
 
After the Quakers scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 13-0 lead, Chris Lombardi scored off a Matt Layden feed at the 5:04 mark of the third period to make it a 13-1 contest.
 
Methodist outscored Guilford, 6-3, in the final period, including a pair of goals by Matt Layden, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
 
Matt Layden finished with a pair of goals and one assist to lead Methodist. Lombardi, Jordan DeSalvo, Ben Click, Hunter Mackenzie and Jake Smerka all scored for the Monarchs, and Justin Layden chipped in an assist. Justin Layden added six groundballs and three caused turnovers, while Daniel Richards picked up five groundballs and forced a pair of turnovers.
 
Travis Rice started in goal for MU and played the first 45:00, he allowed 13 goals and made nine saves. Carl Leibrandt played the final 15:00, surrendering three goals with one save.
 
For Guilford, Fiore finished with four goals and seven assists. Juquan Tells, Chandler Zirkle, Daniel Hughey, and Chase Clausen all scored twice. Jace Swoden added a goal and two assists. Connor Manning led the way with nine groundballs and won 15-of-21 faceoffs. Tells and Fiore each totaled four groundballs.
 
Thomas Deane started in the cage and picked up the win in 30:00 of playing time. He did not allow a goal and made one save.
 
The Monarchs will conclude their season on Saturday at Ferrum beginning at 4::00 pm.
