First Day of Gate City Cut Short; Monarchs in Fourth Following One Complete Round

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Methodist University men's golf, the No. 1 ranked team, finished up its first day of the Gate City Invite, hosted by Greensboro College, on Monday. After one complete round of play, the Monarchs sat in fourth place with a team score of 284 (-4).
 
During round two, a pocket of rain halted action for some time before restarting. Teams were unable to finish the round as darkness settled onto the course.

ROUND ONE
  • Senior Haden Ruby led Methodist following the first round as he shot 66 (-6), a new career-low. He recorded six birdies during his first go around the course to put him in a tie for third.
  • In a tie for 24th, senior Chase Walts posted a 71 (-1). Through his first 13 holes, he was three-over with three bogeys, two birdies, and a double bogey. The 2024 USA South Player of the Year left that in the past though and registered four birdies during his last five holes of round one.
  • Fifth-year captain Aiden Spampinato found himself in a tie for 41st after scoring a 73 (+1) in the first round. A pair of birdies and a bogey had him at one-under following the front half of the course. On the back half, he made two additional birdies but he also recorded two double bogeys.
  • Competing for the first time this season, senior David D'Agostino shot a 74 (+2) and that placed him in a tie for 57th place. Through his first nine holes, he made two bogeys, a double bogey, and a birdie. He played better on his last nine with two birdies and a bogey.
  • Freshman Lucas Herring rounds out the Monarchs as he posted a 75 (+3) in his opening round, which put him in a tie for 69th. On his scorecard, he registered four bogeys, three birdies, and a double bogey.
UP NEXT
Methodist and the rest of the field will complete the second round tomorrow morning and then continue play right into the final round.
