FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist football team was hoping to send head coach Jim Sypult out with a win in his last game at Monarch Stadium, but Greensboro spoiled their plans sending the Monarchs away with a 22-19 loss.

Greensboro capitalized first with a 51-yard touchdown pass after the Methodist coverage slipped on the play. The extra point was blocked for the Pride to hold the 6-0 lead. The Monarchs were held without a first down in the first quarter, but John Flanagan earned a first down on an 11-yard run early in the second quarter. The drive stalled, but Methodist regained possession with 10:01 to play in the quarter driving into the Pride territory. Jonathan Strickland opened the drive with a nine-yard rush and 11-yard reception before John Glenn and Corey McGuire took over driving inside the red zone. McGuire finished with a four-yard touchdown run to tie the score. Methodist went for the two-point conversion, but came up short.

On the opening drive of the second half, Methodist reached the Greensboro two-yard line, but settled for the 20-yard field goal by Tyler Mosko to take the 9-6 lead. The Monarchs' defense prevented a first down on the Pride's next possession and Methodist drove back down for Mosko to convert the 31-yard field goal.

Methodist held the 12-6 lead briefly before Greensboro's Rodney Beasley ran back the kick-off for a 90-yard touchdown. Antwan Thorpe ran the ball in for the two-point conversion and the 14-12 advantage. Travis Murphy took over on the 50-yard line and found Strickland for an 11-yard gain. Flanagan picked up three yards and Strickland had a huge 21-yard carry to set up the offense on Greensboro's 15-yard line. McGuire finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Mosko's extra point gave Methodist the 19-14 lead.

Methodist's Jacob Hunt grabbed an interception late in the third quarter, but the Monarchs could not capitalize giving the ball back to the Pride. Greensboro used an eight-play drive to score their third touchdown of the day. Thorpe connected with Byrd for the two point conversion and the 22-19 lead.

Methodist would have four more possessions to try to counter, but two fumbles cut the drives short. Greensboro held on for the 22-19 win.

McGuire finished with 128 yards with two touchdowns and Flanagan added 52 yards. Glenn was 6-for-16 passing for 33 yards. Strickland led all receivers with two catches for 22 yards.

Antjuan Jones led the defense with 12 tackles and a forced fumble while Navahri Holden added 10 tackles.

Greensboro's Kall Daniel was 16-for-35 for 181 yards passing and Robert Byrd picked up 91 yards rushing.

The Monarchs will finish the season at Christopher Newport next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kick-off. Methodist recognized seven seniors before the game and bid farewell to Sypult in his last appearance at home.
