Methodist Falls to Ferrum

Box Score FERRUM, Va. - Ferrum College jumped out to a 23-0 lead and never trailed by less than 13 points as they finished with the 37-17 win.

The Panthers scored the first touchdown of the game with 9:10 remaining in the first quarter for their second possession of the game. Methodist was unable to get a first down and Ferrum regained possession on their own 24-yard line. Ferrum quarterback Marcus Mayo took the offense back into Methodist territory. Methodist's Josh Brown and Navahri Holden stopped the Panthers at the Methodist 28-yard line on third and long forcing Ferrum to settle for the 45-yard field goal and the 10-0 lead. Methodist went three and out and Ferrum put together a 62-yard drive to score their second touchdown of the game. The Monarchs blocked the extra point leaving the Panthers with the 16-0 lead.

Methodist quarterback Max Reber picked up two first downs to close the quarter, but the drive stalled in the second quarter. The Panthers capitalized on an interception midway through the second quarter and scored a touchdown to move ahead 23-0. The Monarchs got on the board late in the quarter as Reber took the offense deep into Ferrum territory. Methodist earned a first down at the Ferrum three-yeard line, but settled for a 22-yard field goal from Tyler Mosko. The Methodist defense held off Ferrum late in the half, leaving the Panthers with the 23-3 lead at halftime.

The Monarchs scored first in the second half with a 63-yard drive. Reber was 3-for-4 passing in the drive and John Flanagan finished it off with a 16-yard run for the touchdown. Tyler Mosko's extra point cut the Ferrum lead to 13 with 7:51 to play in the third quarter. The Panthers responded with a touchdown at the other end to go ahead 30-10. Both teams traded fumbles early in the fourth quarter with no damage done. The Methodist defense forced Ferrum to punt with 4:28 remaining in the game and Malcolm McCoy got inside to block the punt for Van Conyers to recover at the Ferrum 37-yard line. Reber came back out and connected with Vaughn Cross on the first play of the drive to the one-yard line. Reber finished it off for the touchdown and with Mosko's extra point, the Monarchs were within 13 points.

Tyler Mosko attempted an on-side kick on the kickoff, but Ferrum recovered and scored a touchdown at the other end. The Methodist offense was stalled with an interception on the ensuing possession leaving the Panthers with the 37-17 win.

Reber finished 15-for-32 passing with two interceptions and 157 yards. Flanagan paced the rushing offense with 29 yards while Cross led all receivers with five catches for 71 yards. Seth Sandlin had a team-high nine tackles while Keltcey Richardson added eight.

The Monarchs will be back at home on Saturday when they host Shenandoah University at 1 p.m. in conjunction with Methodist Homecoming festivities.
