Box Score MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Methodist came from behind and held the 19-17 lead late in the third quarter, but Maryville regained the lead and held off a late push by the Monarchs for the 26-24 victory.

Maryville (1-4, 1-1) jumped out on top after pinning the Monarchs deep in their own territory and taking over on the Methodist 40-yard line. Scots' quarterback Tim Conner finished the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass and the 6-0 lead. Methodist's Alex Russell blocked the extra point. Maryville picked up where they left off on their next possession and drove back down the field for quarterback Melvin Burston to connect for a 17-yard touchdown. After the extra point Maryville had taken the quick 13-0 lead with 3:09 left in the first quarter.

The Monarchs (1-4, 0-2) started to put together their offense and at the end of the quarter had reached the Maryville 13-yard line on a seven yard run by quarterback Max Reber for the first down. Reber finished the drive with two passes including a 13-yard touchdown pass to Nathan Kindley. Tyler Mosko's extra point was good and the Monarchs trailed just 13-7.

During the second quarter the Methodist defense allowed just two Maryville first downs and recovered four fumbles including one on a punt return to give the ball back to Methodist. The Monarchs were inside the red zone with fourth down and three yards to go but Reber's pass went incomplete and turned the ball back over to the Scots. Methodist's Tyler Mitchell forced the third fumble of the day for Wayne Hanns to recover and the Monarchs took over back on the Scots' four-yard line. The Monarchs couldn't punch it in, but Mosko converted a 27-yard line field goal to move the Monarchs within three at halftime.

Maryville took advantage of their first possession of the half and drove down to the Methodist four-yard line. A penalty sent them back to the nine and the Monarchs' Navahri Holden earned a sack on third down that forced the Scots to settle for a 30-yard field goal on fourth and 12. Methodist took over late in the third quarter and after a five-yard rush by John Flanagan, Reber put together three consecutive completions capped off by a 38-yard pass to Matthew Phifer for a touchdown and Mosko's extra point gave Methodist the 19-17 lead with 1:54 to play in the quarter.

The Scots opened the fourth quarter with four big first downs to reach the Methodist five yard line. The Monarchs' defense held strong, but Maryville's Andrew Noboa converted the 23-yard field goal to regain the lead at 19-17. Neither team could score on their next possession, but Methodist drove into Maryvile territory midway through the quarter. They were sitting on the 20-yard line at second and seven, but two penalties put them back to second down and 23-yard sto go. Unable to make headway, Mosko attempted a 53-yard field goal, but it missed wide left.

Maryville's Conner was intercepted on the Scots next possession, but the Monarchs fumbled on the return and the Scots' Zane Winders returned the fumble for four yards for a touchdown and extended their lead to 26-17 with Noboa's extra point. Reber didn't waste time getting the Monarchs back on the board with a 59-yard touchdown pass to James Bevans on the seocnd play of the drive. Mosko's converted the extra point, but the Monarchs trailed 26-24 with 2:50 to play. After two successful on-side kicks a week ago, Mosko went for it again, but Maryville recovered the kick and after getting two first downs, the Scots were able to run out the clock and hold on for the win.

Reber finished 15-for-28 passing for 231 yards and three touchdowns. Phifer led the receivers with five catches for 84 yards. Flanagan finished with 40 yards rushing. Navahri Holden led the defense with 11 tackles.

Tim Conner was 12-for-24 passing for 173 yards and one interception for Maryville.

The Monarchs will be back on the road next Saturday when they travel to Ferrum College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
