GRIMESLAND, N.C. Methodist's men's and women's Division III cross country teams stepped up a couple of divisions Friday, racing in the East Carolina University Pirate Invitational with the likes of teams from Duke University, the University of Richmond, and the University of South Carolina.
The Monarch teams acquitted themselves quite well as the men finished 11th of 16 teams in the eight-kilometer race, and the women were 13th of 15 in their six-kilometer event -- each as the top D-III team on their leaderboards.

Women's 6K individual winner: Scolasticah Kemei, Elon (20:25.67)
METHODIST NUMBERS
- Freshmen Courtney Drumm and Andrew Topoly paced their respective women's and men's squads. Drumm finished 79th in a time of 24 minutes, 11.10 seconds, and Topoly was 68th with a clocking of 26:31.94.
- Cameron Adair also broke the 27-minute mark in the men's 8K, posting a 75th-place time of 26:47.10.
- The final three scoring runners for the Monarch men crossed the finish with a spread of just 22 seconds. Jonathan Wertz finished at 27:43.22 for 102nd place, followed by Connor Ayers (105th, 27:50.99) and Endashaw Tonja (108th, 28:05.91).
- In the women's 6K, Makayla Lawler was next to finish after Drumm, taking 100th place in a time of 25:25.97.
- Olivia Mague (113th, 27:55) came in ahead of the duo of Lemlem Gebremichele (118th, 25:52.14) and Ally Mattera (119th, 28:57.11) to close out the scoring places for Methodist.

The Pirate Invite caps off the regular season for the Monarchs, who will head to Rocky Mount, N.C., for the USA South Athletic Conference championship meet on November 2.
